About Me

Hello my name is Allison. I'm a freshmen in high school, after high school my future plans are to attend college to become optometrist. I like to play sports, I play basketball, softball, and soccer. In my spare time I hang out with my friends and family, hunt, and go to Steeler games. I also have an older brother and a sister whose names are Vinny and Amber.

American Elm

The American Elm is the tree that I researched. Its scientific name is Ulmus Americana. It is a Deciduous tree, the leaves on the Elm are alternate and the type of margin it has is a simple (pinnate) and coarsely toothed. Relatives of the American Elm tree are the Hackberry, Zelkova, Basswood, and other Elms. Distinguishing characteristics of the leaf and tree are that the leaf has a unequal base and it has a rough upper surface and a soft-hairy surface below.The tree's tree bark has flattened ridges with intervening furrows. A specific use of the tree is manufacturing of boxes, barrels, and furniture

Catalpa

The second tree I researched was the Catalpa. Its scientific name is Catalpa bignonioides Walt. One of its relatives is the Northern Catalpa. It is a deciduous tree with a wavy margin that is smooth above and hairy beneath. The pinnate is simple and leaves are opposite. Distinguishing traits of the trees and the leaves is the bark colors is a light brown and its shallowly ridge and scaly. The tree is a short-trunk, broad-crowned tree. The leaves on the tree are heart-shaped 6"-10" long and 6" wide. The twigs are stout yellow brown with small buds on the side hidden in the bark. The Catalpa wood is use for post and the tree is planted for its shape and flowers.

Biomolecules

  1. Doing the test like Benedicts, Biuret, Iodine and Sudan IV test showed me the results of Fat, Proteins, Starch, and Simple sugars. The food I did was egg whites It didn’t have any fat, starch, or simple sugars, but it did have proteins. To test for fat and oils I put five drops of Sudan IV stain, I waited for a while but no deep shade of red showed, therefore, my results for fats and oils was negative. To test for starch and simple sugars I used the Benedicts test. I added a full dropper of Benedicts solution and heated it for about 3 minutes. This process helped me find simple sugars. My answerer came to simple sugars not being present in egg whites because there was no color change or an orange precipitate being formed. To test Starch I used the Iodine test, I put three to five drops of Iodine in my test tube but no color change happened to prove that starch was in egg white, therefore, my result to starch being in egg whites was a negative. Lastly I tested for Proteins using the Biuret test. I add the solution and saw the color change to purple showing me that egg whites have proteins. In conclusion egg whites only have proteins but no fat and oils, simple sugars, or starch.
  2. From the result chart from the class the fruits had mostly sugar. Vegetables have no fat or sugars. Meats are mostly found in proteins and fats. Egg yolks are present in fats and proteins while egg whites are absent in all but proteins.

4. I was surprised to see fat in a banana because I thought bananas were good for you. Also I was surprised to see sugar in egg yolks because I would never except that, I thought egg yolks was basically just proteins.



5. I researched more on peas and potatoes. I found that peas should have sugars; in the nutrition facts it says that peas should have 9 grams of sugar. http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/fruits-and-fruit-juices/1809/2 . Potatoes should also have sugar. In the nutrition facts potatoes should have 4 grams of sugar. http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/vegetables-and-vegetable-products/2770/2 . The potato and pea should have been positive instead of negative.
